Varonis to Acquire SlashNext

Today, we are expanding our Data Security Platform to include AI-native email security, with the acquisition of SlashNext. This strategic move gives customers a complete threat detection and response solution from the first point of attack to the last.

By integrating SlashNext’s best-in-class phishing detection with the Varonis Data Security Platform and MDDR service, we are strengthening our ability to stop attacks via email and collaboration apps before they have a chance to become data breaches.

SlashNext’s founder, Atif Mushtaq, and his team have built and refined proprietary AI technology that detects expert-created and AI-generated threats more accurately than any other solution on the market.

With this acquisition, Varonis is again pushing the boundaries of modern AI-powered data security.

Email security built for the AI era

AI-powered hackers are flooding users with social engineering attacks across email and collaboration tools like WhatsApp, Slack, Teams, and Zoom. By imitating tone, branding, voice, and even video, they’re launching automated campaigns that humans — and traditional email security tools — can’t detect.

SlashNext is powered by predictive AI models that use techniques such as computer vision, natural language processing, and virtual browsers to protect users from the widest range of social engineering attacks.

The best detection engine on the planet

In an independent test of cloud email security vendors conducted by the Tolly Group, SlashNext outperformed leading providers such as Abnormal Security and Mimecast. In the test, SlashNext demonstrated the highest overall detection accuracy (99%) and a perfect 100% detection rate for BEC and QR code attacks.

The combination of SlashNext’s multi-channel phishing defense and Varonis’ end-to-end approach to data security — including AI security and identity protection — gives customers the platform they need to detect early signs of compromise and stop attacks long before data is impacted.

A visionary approach to email security

Atif Mushtaq spent nine years as a senior scientist at FireEye, where he was one of the main architects behind the company’s malware detection technology. He applied that experience to unraveling the psychology behind email phishing and social engineering.

With SlashNext, he and his team created a technology that identifies characteristics in tone and style that reveal the attacker’s intent and motive. Once identified, SlashNext trains itself on the core threat and a multitude of possible variations that it self-generates. The result is a technology that detects expert-created and AI-generated social engineering threats more accurately than anything else on the market.

Continued innovation in threat detection

Varonis is a pioneer in data-centric threat detection. In 2013, Varonis introduced real-time data detection and response (DDR) to the world. In 2016, Varonis added advanced user and entity behavior analysis (UEBA). In 2018, we formed our incident response (IR) organization and Varonis Threat Labs.

In 2024, we created the first-of-its-kind managed data detection and response (MDDR) service to put expert eyes on customer data 24/7/365 with an industry-leading 30-minute SLA on ransomware response. With these innovations, we have investigated more than 10,000 incidents and prevented an average of five cyberattacks each day for our customers.

With the acquisition of SlashNext, we are extending our data-centric threat detection capabilities with the market’s best phishing and social engineering detection solution. We can now stop one of the most prevalent forms of attack and extend our end-to-end approach to protecting data.
