Most people agree that standard datasets become stale within 30-60 days. Large amounts of inactive data on primary storage increases cost and risk while adding little value. Tracking and monitoring the number of folders containing stale data will help in implementing a strategic archiving policy and ensuring proper maintenance of the file server environment.
From the list on the left, find “No. of folders with stale data,” click on it to highlight the selection, and click the “>” arrow to move it to the selection field (Optional: select the color of the chart using the drop-down menu).
During the implementation of a data archiving initiative, you will see the graph slope downward from left to right indicating the total number of folders decrease as the project progresses. Once the initial project is complete, and a steady-state is reached, the graph should remain at a consistent level if an automatic tiering/archiving solution is implemented. The Varonis Data Transport Engine can automate data disposition.
