Before Varonis, it would have taken hours and hours going through log files to try and compile a user’s activity in relation to network file shares.

Challenge

The Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital IT team was searching for the right solution to control the security of its data - improving their security posture with a scalable solution that would grow with them. The hospital needed to protect regulated patient data, clean up over a terabyte of unstructured data, and monitor their file activity and user behavior.

We completely cleaned up the security of more than a terabyte of network file shares with Varonis. Seeing the results of the changes was huge.

Solution

  • Classify and lock down sensitive data: The hospital uses Varonis to classify regulated healthcare and patient data, identify who has (and should have) access to sensitive data, and lock down access without interrupting the businesses workflow
  • Achieve compliance: Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital can now meet compliance requests easily - automating reports on file activity, permissions, and more.

When I receive a compliance request for a report on a particular user and their file activity over a specific period of time, it takes me less than a minute to run. Before Varonis, it would have taken hours and hours going through log files to try and compile a user’s activity in relation to network file shares.

  • Reduce risk: Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital leverages Varonis to clean up over a terabyte of network shares - reducing risk by locking down overexposed data and reducing global access.
  • Protect against ransomware: The hospital can now alert on suspicious activity and potential malware attacks with Varonis, identify known ransomware variants before it's too late, and proactively defend their data before it's too late.

A week into our implementation we had a brush with ransomware. One of the employees remotely connected and went on a site that started downloading Locky. Luckily the Varonis rules we had in place immediately told me when the individual started encrypting the file, so we disabled the account and restored the files. Without Varonis we would have ended up with a much broader exposure of the breach and the result would have been a lot worse.
