Varonis Enhances Market-Leading data governance software with innovations in search, Scalability and reporting

DatAdvantage™ 3.0 actualizes rightful user-to-data access that is automated and scalable

NEW YORK - July 23, 2007 - Varonis Systems Inc. (http://www.varonis.com), the foremost innovator and provider of comprehensive, actionable data governance solutions, today introduced DatAdvantage 3.0. This software-based system automates control of user-to-data access by computing and recommending access privileges based on business need. New features in DatAdvantage 3.0 include advanced search capabilities, enhanced scalability and more out-of-box reporting and auditing.

"Most organizations can’t easily identify ownership, lineage and usage patterns of their critical data," said Ted Friedman, research vice president at Gartner Inc. "Answers to questions like these need to be on hand for every audit and for ongoing data governance activities. These are very difficult questions to answer, both in the structured data world, but also for less-structured information. Companies know they must control the rightful use of data of all types, and seek approaches that offer greater visibility and control."

The latest version of DatAdvantage offers significant enhancements in search, scalability and reporting. Key enhancements include:

Advanced Search

DatAdvantage provides users with an extremely granular audit record of user-to-data access activity. This record greatly expedites auditing, allowing IT operations personnel to conduct a data access analysis by filtering information based on individual or data set of interest and by a given action, time of day or IP address. Greatly expanded search capabilities now allow multiple conditions to be defined for a single inquiry. For instance, administrators can conduct a search to see all files deleted by a given user within sensitive data folders for a given point in time.

Scalability

Varonis solutions collect and analyze vast amounts of access event information unobtrusively from file servers. The collection is performed by software called "probes," which then forwards data to the Varonis analytics server. With the latest release, Varonis has tripled the number of file servers from which a single probe can gather access event data. The substantial increase in the probe-to-file-server ratio lets Varonis ensure that not only are an enterprise’s data governance needs served today, but with ample built-in scale to accommodate the file servers that will invariably be added in the future.

New Reports

DatAdvantage offers numerous out-of-box reports that detail user access, sensitive folder access, inactive data sets and inactive users, among others. With each version, Varonis adds more reports and customization options. This latest release features dashboards that show every file server’s data utilization statistics in graphical and table formats. For instance, data storage and archiving managers can see when a data set was created and the statistics for access. Data utilization reports can be generated daily or at chosen intervals for a given file server or servers.

Varonis also has reports that track the activities of network administrators. Some of the management and security tasks reported on include:

  • Access-denied requests — times a user tried to access a resource
  • Change detail in Active Directory — group memberships that have been added or removed and by whom
  • Change detail on file system — server setting and data access configuration changes
The Data Governance Challenge

Data governance is the framework of people, permissions and processes that are employed in proper data use. Leading analyst firms estimate that 80 to 90 percent of companies’ intellectual property and confidential customer data is unstructured data such as documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

DatAdvantage gives organizations total visibility and control over their unstructured data, ensuring only the right users have access to the right data at all times. DatAdvantage actualizes data governance by visualizing, auditing and controlling who has access to which data. With DatAdvantage, organizations can view current user permissions to data, audit how the data is used and control who gets access to the data.

"With Varonis, Sharp Healthcare was able to make the revocations of permissions to data a consistent practice," said Linda Hill, manager, Technical Assistance Center at Sharp Healthcare. "We also eliminated sizable amounts of IT overhead associated with responding to access requests and auditing of permissions rights."

Completely unique to Varonis, the DatAdvantage software also recommends data permissions based on automated analysis of user-access patterns and behavior. Varonis’ patent-pending analytics technology is customer-proven to be multiple nines accurate. To further ease the burden on IT personnel, the recommended changes can be explicitly pushed into the live environment at the administrator’s discretion.

"User-access needs and data volumes grow every day, and, up until now, there has been no way to keep access controls current with change," said Yaki Faitelson, president, CEO and founder of Varonis. "Varonis is the first solution to control permissions, track data use and automate the entire process for enacting rightful access."

Pricing and Availability

DatAdvantage version 3.0 is available today through the Varonis worldwide network of channel partners. Solution pricing is based on the number of data users; licenses for 1-250 users start at $25,000. DatAdvantage 3.0 is available to current DatAdvantage customers for no additional cost.
